Why the TV remained off until now.....
When we began our journey with the Lord, the first thing that we did was to allot a time for him. I work from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m, then my wife takes care of our daughter. The TV was our main source of entertainment and information. If I am correct, it is open close to an average of 3 to 4 hours daily. On the weekends, it maybe even longer, though it is not non stop. I watch primarily the news programs and some documentaries. Of course, the occasional dramas. That was before we were both in Christ.
One observation that we had when the TV was open was that we can't concentrate in our work. We would always check what's showing, thus our work is delayed. Also, I noticed that there isn't much a lot that improved on TV. The same news, the same dramas, the same documentaries, all giving what the masses wanted. For a period of time, it got boring, since in my own opinion TV programs didn't get better but got worse.
The last program we both watched was an accidental drama that I watched. Since it was in it's finale week, well, why not finish it? I stayed up late watching it (since in the major networks in the Philippines there are tons of in between advertisements between programs). The finale episode was so-so. Then I told my wife that we will experiment and not open the TV for one week. This was to give way to our bible study.
When we found Christ, we are always yearning to increase our faith in him. After dinner, we cleaned up our home and our baby. Then, we go to the bedroom and have the bible study. We use the Our Daily Bread to do our bible study. We pray and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. My wife reads the bible passage and I read the article. After that, we share our insights and experiences on both the article and bible passage. Then, we both have a closing prayer. Our study time is normally around 30 minutes to sometimes and hour.
One week of the TV being off became two weeks, then almost one month. The last time we opened it was just to check the weather report and the flooding around us. It was even barely an hour. And, we don't miss the old programs on TV.
In closing, I am not asking you to do what we did. Just allot at least first 30 minutes a day to study God's word. In doing this, you will increase your faith in him. Then, increase to at least one hour. You will discover a lot of hidden treasures. Words that will give hope, words that will save you, words that will bring you peace. In my next post, I will give you tips on how we conduct our bible study.
How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Psalm 119:103
